Lack of electricity affects economic activities in Báruè District – Manica province

A power failure that occurs in the locality of Chiula-Honde in Administrative Post Catandica district Báruè, in Manica province, is affecting the course of economic activities locally. The problem was caused by the failure of a device that generates energy.

According to a local businessman, Traimo Parato, traders and businessmen are accumulating losses. To conserve some fresh products such as meat and soft drinks, they are traveling up about 60 km to and fro in search of ice cubes at Catandica Township. This distance could be avoided if there was this basic resource and service.

In addition, the local residents said that the of hydroelectric at Chiula – Honde is always on breakdown. "In 2011, for example, there were limitations in the power supply due to destruction by rain, the conducting channel of water." Maria Rosa Pedro, one of the commercial dealers at Honde Growth point, expressed concern with the frequent problems that occurres at Honde electricity station.

Alternatively, some residents are using solar energy source. Others use generators, which demands high costs to run. The chief executive of Chiula-Honde, Thomas Maebegui told Catandica Community Radio that the energy power failure is due to technical problem which was recorded since 2012. Maebegui added that, the local governments of the district and the province of Manica have been already informed about the case. “ The solution is coming soon.” Said the chief executive of Chiula-Honde, Thomas Maebegui.

Note that, this power station was installed under the rural electrification program with financial support from the German government through GTZ. The project took just over eight million meticais which is equivalent to and its works started in 2006 and ended in 2008.

According to 2007 census of Mozambique, Chiula-Honde Administrative Post has a population of about 45 000 people.
