Child labor worries residents of Catandica Township

Community Radio Catandica was  informed several times by  members of the communities, that the number of children in the commercial sector is increasing  day and night in the Báruè district  especially in Catandic Township.

With this information our team  visited and saw more than 10 children  of about 7-15 years of age working  in the Shop of  a local businessman by the name Tohid Islam and Retail Trading Company. This shop is located on the National Highway,  Road number 7, in Báruè district  of  Manica Province. These children  confirmed  that  they work and do many activities on daily basis at that place,  packing  boxes of products without any labour contract. These children also presented that they receive  nuts  which does not correspond to these activities.

"In most  cases we do a lot of work the whole  day and receive a value of fifteen meticais (15.00 Mtn) sometimes twenty metical ( 20.00Mtn) to each one of us," said one of the  minors  to the local Community Radio Catandica.

The  unemployed youth  groups said that they  have no access to employment to these Shops because the Local Businessmen want to  use these children as cheap labour.

Other children interviewed by Catandica Community Radio argued  that  the local shops  are very helpful for their survival because they give them money and biscuits. The businessman Tohib Islam said that these children are not invited  but they just come alone to his shop.
